Corvo and Flores islands form the Western Group of the Azorean archipelago. Corvo is about 27, 8 km (15 miles) distant from Flores and is located 30ş 48’ W and 39ş 40’ N. It is the smallest island of the archipelago with just 17, 5 sq km (6,7sq miles).
Insuli Corvi was its first designation. This island was discovered around the year 1452, but its settlement only occurred after 1548.
Take the road to the inner land, and go to Monte Grosso; from here, one can admire Caldeirăo, a lagoon located in an extinct volcano crater. Return by the same road to the village-place. You must pay also a visit to Morro do Păo de Açucar belvedere.
The festivities in honour of Espírito Santo, S. Pedro and Nossa Senhora dos Milagres are the religious events of the island. The most important celebration is in honour of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres, and takes place on August 15.
?Tortas de ervas do calhau? (vegetable pie), ?couves da barça?, ?couves fritas? (fried cabbages), liver sauce and handmade cheeses are good examples of the local gastronomy.
Whether practising trolling or bottom fishing, these waters are a true paradise. One can capture sargus, sea bream, grouper, moray and conger among others. Angling or using live bait offer the possibility of catch species like anchovy, long beaked fish and saw fish. On boat, specimens of other species are possible captures: turbot, big fish, tuna and sword fish.
The underwater life richness and the unpolluted waters are an irresistible attraction and a unique experience. There are no dangerous species ou snakes in the island.
