Following the new regulations on access to Lagoa do Fogo implemented last year, 2023, access to the road between Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água will once again be restricted from June 15 until September 30, 2024.
As a result, access will only be available to tourist entertainment companies, travel agencies, cabs, resident citizens and, of course, the bus service.
Similarly to last year, the shuttle will operate between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., with a bus leaving every 30 minutes or so. The service will be active throughout the week, including weekends and public holidays.
The route will be divided into two circular lines, the Red Line and the Green Line.
Red Line – Starts at Caldeira Velha (Ribeira Grande), Bela Vista viewpoint, Pico da Barrosa, Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint, returning to Caldeira Velha;
Green Line – Starts at Casa da Água (Lagoa), Pico da Barrosa, Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint, returning to Caldeira Velha.
Each line lasts approximately 1 hour, and each journey will be longer depending on the number and time of departures for each traveler.
At the starting points of each line, there are parking lots that can be used by anyone using the bus. Local residents can get tickets for free.
This bus service is not mandatory for travel agencies, tourist entertainment companies (which include the Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint in their tours) and cabs.
Tickets can be purchased online (https://lagoadofogo.pt/index.php?lang=en#tm-section-book), as well as in tourist establishments belonging to the ticket sales system. They are free for local residents and cost 5 euros for non-residents over the age of 6.
In total, there are around 200 parking spaces, spread over 3 locations:
Caldeira Velha parking lot, with 101 spaces and free parking;
The parking lot next to Casa da Água, with 60 spaces and free parking;
Short-term parking at the Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint, with 48 spaces. Only tour operators, travel agents, cabs and residents are allowed to park in this area.
