Flores Island Waterfalls

3 September, 2020AzoresAzores Guide

The island of Flores is one of the nine islands of the Azores where nature has a very strong expression. It is located in the western group, together with the island of Corvo, and it is on this island that the Azores and the European continent find their westernmost point, thanks to the Ilhéu do Monchique. It is interesting to note that this islet, due to its location, served as a reference point for calibrating navigation instruments and confirming navigators’ routes.

Due to the rich and abundant fauna and flora present on the island, it is part of the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve network. A true nature retreat and one of the mandatory places to visit that must be included in your list of trips has to offer from boat trips overlooking its rugged coastline to diving in the natural pools formed by its majestic waterfalls.

And it is precisely this aspect that we want to highlight, the cascades of the island of Flores. One of the most abundant islands in water resources, where they appear in the form of cascades, lagoons, streams and wells.

In the town of Ribeira Grande, a waterfall with an extension of 300 meters of altitude, one of the largest of the Azores and that impresses beautifully its size and beauty. Next, in the town of Fajã Grande, you will find the Poço do Bacalhau (Codfish Well), a well-formed by a waterfall of 90 meters of altitude. There you can bathe and relax in tune with the sound of the cascade crashing.

Between the town of Fajã Grande and Fajãzinha, you will find one of the most beautiful natural monuments of the island of Flores and the world – the extensive green wall with over 20 waterfalls. This is undoubtedly one of the places you can’t miss.

These numerous waterfalls give shape to Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro, also known as Poço da Alagoinha. Come down to this well, through a path properly identified, there you will have a wide view of the cascades.

In the Azores nature is multiplied by its nine islands, in Flores, we can say that they are its cascades. Don’t let this unique experience escape and always be accompanied by your best travel companion to the Azores, our tour guide.
