Also known as Ponta do Castelo Lighthouse, is located in Ponta do Castelo, in the village of Maia in the parish of Santo Espírito. The lighthouse is open for visits, where you can learn more about its history and operation. In addition, you can enjoy at this location a beautiful view of the Bay of Maia and even go down to the old Whaling Factory.
Forte de São Brás
Located in Vila do Porto, it is believed that its construction took place around the 17th century. Its main purpose was to protect the island from attacks and lootings by French, English and even Barbary pirates and privateers.
Baía de São Lourenço Natural Reserve
It is a seaside resort with a beach and a natural swimming pool, located at the bottom of a wonderful slope, where you can admire the vines that produce the famous São Lourenço wine.
Santa Maria Museum
Located in the center of the Santo Espírito parish, this museum is set up in an old rural house from the 20th century. Here, there are expositions of furniture and utensils of a typical Santa Maria home.
Ribeira do Maloás
Also known as “Calçada dos Gigantes”, this creek is located in Malbusca, in the Santo Epírito parish. It has a waterfall 20 meters high and its formation was the result of the contact between sea water and molten lava.
Praia Formosa
A magnificent white sand beach that is a contrast to the rest of the Azorean beaches which are dark sand beaches due to the decomposition of basalt rock. These waters have an alluring temperature that are just right for a relaxing swim and also to practice sea sports, like surfing.
Cascata do Aveiro
Located in Maia, on the east coast of the Santa Maria Island, this imposing waterfall is over a 100 meters tall. It has two ponds along its stream descent.
Poço da Pedreira

Barreiro da Faneca
It’s a vast arid and clayey terrain, making up a desert-like landscape coloured yellow and red, which is unique in the Azores.
Ermida de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos
It is believed to be the first ever built chapel in Santa Maria Island. It’s said that, upon his return from discovering America, Christopher Columbus and his crew prayed at this chapel due to a promise they made at high sea.
Convento de São Francisco
Founded in 1607, this monastery was the target of lootings by pirates in 1616 and 1675. Here stand the Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias and the Church dedicated to Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres. Here also stands the Vila do Porto City Hall.
