This weekend (from June 24th to 26th) the municipality of Ribeira Grande, São Miguel, will host the MEO Surf League at Areal de Santa Bárbara. Thus, the Allianz Ribeira Grande Pro marks the return of the competition to the Capital of Surfing, for the first time since 2009 and will be the 4th and penultimate stage to decide the national surf champions of the men’s and women’s divisions.
The winner of the circuit held in 2009 was Frederico Morais, who returns this year to lead the entourage that takes the best national surfers to the Azores. This time, however, the male classification is led by Halley Batista, who, as in the last stage, is once again looking to write his name on the list of winners.
In the women’s ranking, despite the table being led by Teresa Bonvalot and Kika Veselko, Carolina Mendes is the surfer who is in the best position to regain the title of national champion. The 27-year-old surfer had already been two-time champion in 2017, thus occupying the top spot on the Women’s National Surfing Circuit for the second consecutive year.
This event will also bring a great opportunity for young local talent to show their potential and will promote the municipality of Ribeira Grande as the Surf Capital.
