What to do on a summer day in São Miguel island

17 August, 2022AzoresAzores Guide
Want to make the most of your time on São Miguel? Discover the best places to visit this summer:

Sete Cidades Lagoon

This curious landscape marked by two lakes of different colors (blue and green) is a true ex-libris of the Azores. Its altitude often leads to the formation of clouds or fog that hinder the view. Thus, a day with good weather is an opportunity you should not miss if you plan to visit this wonder. This advice also applies to other places on the island, as you will want the best weather to be able to enjoy the landscapes that São Miguel has to offer.

Pinhal da Paz

Pinhal da Paz is one of the most popular leisure places on the island. It has an area of 50 hectares abundant in various plant species that decorate the landscape with a strong environmental component. Thus, tranquility hangs in the air while you take advantage of the good weather to have a snack, have a barbecue, or simply stroll through the gardens.

Chã Macela Forest Reserve

Huge green space where you can connect with nature, from its extensive forest area rich in endemic species such as heather and cedar, to its variety of animals that inhabit the enclosure. It also has several leisure areas, including a playground and areas where you can have a picnic.

Islet of Vila Franca do Campo

One of the most emblematic places in the Azores, this paradisiacal islet is a true ex-libris of the archipelago, definitely worth a visit on a summer day. Its slopes covered with endemic vegetation protect its peaceful inner bay from the agitation and temperature of the sea, thus allowing you to enjoy a safe, relaxing and picturesque bathing area. Thus, it is definitely an adventure not to be missed, especially when the weather is on your side.

Poça da Dona Beija

Also nicknamed the “Poça da Juventude” (Pool of Youth), the Poça da Dona Beija is known for its medicinal properties, due to its crystal clear waters that hover around 39 degrees and the mineral qualities of the clay/clay from the site. However, we recommend that you visit in the morning or evening, as these are the coldest times of the day, and with water at 39 degrees, the heat can become intense.

Ponta da Madrugada Viewpoint

From this viewpoint you can see the sun rising over the Atlantic Ocean. So, if you have favorable weather, don’t miss the opportunity to experience this landscape. The viewpoint has gardens and a place to have a snack. It is advisable to arrive early. The place is also inhabited by stray cats, but don’t worry because they are very friendly and tame, not refusing to greet anyone who wants to say hello.

Priolo’s Environmental Center

Summer day and open sky always means a good opportunity for birdwatching lovers. If you can relate, go to Priolo’s Environmental Center and participate in the organized walks to watch this small endemic bird. It is a unique opportunity because this small laurel forest, located in the northeast of the island, is the only place in the world where this species lives.
