Lesser-known places to visit – Flores island

2 December, 2022AzoresAzores Guide
Have you visited our main recommendations on the island of Flores? Are you looking for new adventures on the island? Read on and find out what to visit so that your next stay can be a totally different experience!

Museum of the Whale Factory of Boqueirão

The Fábrica da Baleia do Boqueirão Museum documents a significant part of the history and culture of the island of Flores, in an educational and interesting way, doing this through the exhibition of utensils and machinery used in the activity, as well as photographs and videos.

Fajã Grande

The westernmost location in Europe, Fajã Grande is flanked by large slopes covered with green vegetation. Here, you can find some of the most emblematic landscapes of the island of Flores, such as the Poço do Bacalhau waterfall.

Flores Museum

The Flores Museum is divided into two nuclei, one of these being the Fábrica da Baleia do Boqueirão Museum, discussed above. The first core and headquarters, the Convent of St. Bonaventure, dates its construction to 1641. At that time it was a convent of Franciscans, later becoming a hospital, a school, and finally the Flores Museum.
Currently the museum hosts several exhibitions, concerts and events, aiming to promote not only local culture, but also abroad.

Monte das Cruzes Belvedere

The Monte das Cruzes Belvedere offers a panoramic view over the town of Santa Cruz das Flores, the ocean, and the island of Corvo.

Boqueirão Environmental Interpretation Center

The Environmental Interpretation Center of Boqueirão focuses mainly on promoting knowledge about marine environments, allowing you to learn about different seabirds and cetaceans.
Curiously, the current Interpretation Center was built in tanks that were previously used to store whale oil.

Ponta do Albernaz Lighthouse

Ponta do Albernaz Lighthouse is the westernmost lighthouse in Europe. It reaches a height of 15 meters and has a cylindrical tower and a red lantern. Visits can be made inside the lighthouse, guided by the resident lighthouse keeper.
From this lighthouse you can see the island of Corvo and the islet of Monchique, the westernmost point in Europe.
