São Miguel Arcanjo Festivities

The Festas de São Miguel Arcanjo (Saint Michael the Archangel Festivities) take place on the island of São Miguel, in Vila Franca do Campo. Their peak is on May 8, and they can either begin or end on this day. This date is important for these festivities because it marks the appearance of Saint Michael (archangel venerated in Christianity, Judaism, Islam and some Afro-Brazilian religions).

In 2023 the Festas de São Miguel Arcanjo will begin on May 3rd and will last until the 8th of the same month. During this period, there will be processions, pilgrimages, masses and musical performances.

May 4 – Thursday:

• 5:00-7:00 p.m. – Confessions;

• 5:00 p.m. – Performance by Canhoto (marquee);

• 11:00 p.m. – Performance of DJ Rudinho (marquee).

May 5 – Friday:

• 8:00 p.m. – Promises of Group 436 (Matriz);

• 8:30 p.m. – Opening of the Quarters of the Patron Saints;

• 9:00 p.m. – Performance of the Drums Group “Uno Jovens” (Garden);

• 10:00 p.m. – Performance of Aspegic (marquee);

• 11:00 p.m. – Performance of DJ Antoine C (marquee).

May 6, Saturday:

• 10:00 a.m. – Collection of the Offerings (Migalha);

• 1:00 p.m. – Concentration of the floats (Rua Vila do Porto);

• 1:30 p.m. – Parade of floats through the procession route;

• 3:00 p.m. – Children entertainment (Garden);

• 06:00 p.m. – Pig on a spit;

• 08:00 p.m. – Auction of cattle (near the Hermitage of Mãe de Deus);

• 10:00 p.m. – Performance of Banda Larga (marquee);

• 00:00 a.m. – DJ Play (marquee).

May 7 – Sunday:

• 11:30 a.m. – Solemn Mass of St. Michael the Archangel;

• 5:30 p.m. – Arrival of the Patron Saints at the Matriz;

• 6:00 p.m. – Procession of St. Michael the Archangel, Procession of Labor;

• 09:00 p.m. – Performance of Banda Lealdade (bandstand);

• 11:00 p.m. – Performance of João Moniz (marquee).

May 8 – Monday

• 11:00 a.m. – Mass at the Main Church;

• 4:00 p.m. – Auction;

• 9:00 p.m. – Traditions Night: Folkloric Rancho of Ponta Garça and São Pedro (Coreto).
