Azorean Pineapple

12 August, 2020AzoresAzores Guide

The Azores being a region of volcanic origin, it would be normal for its gastronomic products to also cause an explosion of flavours in the palate of those who consume them.

It is in this sense that today we will talk about the Azorean Pineapple, an authentic symbol of Azorean culture.

The Pineapple began as a production alternative to the orange that was one of the engines of export in the region, but was severely affected with a disease called gum disease, leading to its massive decay.

Everything indicates that the pineapple was discovered by the Portuguese at the time of colonization of Brazil. It started as a fruit of cultural experience and also of botanical admiration, due to its shape and crown.

The Azores Pineapple is produced in whitewashed glass greenhouses, using traditional cultivation techniques such as: the application of smoke and the use of warm beds, based on organic and vegetable matter, which translates into a fruit with unique qualities of aroma and taste.

Its production, initially, starts in a greenhouse with a temperature around 38º degrees, where the bulbs of plants that have already borne fruit, known as “burrows”, are planted.

After 1 month, these same plants are retained from this high temperature greenhouse and are transplanted to other more spacious greenhouses with a softer temperature.

Each plant bears only one fruit and this process of pineapple growth lasts approximately 2 years.

Most of its production is done in Ponta Delgada and the entrances to the production sites are usually free, so don’t waste your time and come and get to know your production with the help of our guide.

But the Pineapple does not stop there because, besides being able to eat and buy the Pineapple, you can also enjoy all the good things we have done through it, such as: the pineapple liqueur, pineapple ice cream, pineapple cake, pineapple jam, pineapple cheesecake among other regional gastronomic products in which the pineapple is used.

Curiosity: The first pineapple greenhouse was built in 1864 and had a capacity of about 800 pineapples. However, the evolution of production was such that, shortly after, São Miguel Island already had a total of 4300 production greenhouses, thus starting its mass export to the diaspora.
