The island of Flores is one of the most beautiful islands in the Azores Archipelago, and even in the world. It is part of the Western group, together with the island of Corvo, and is the westernmost place on the European continent.
Its beauty fascinates any pair of eyes and is characterized by its abundance of water resources, more specifically its waterfalls and lagoons. The perfect alliance between water and the tireless green makes this island a place that reflects a little of the beauty of the other eight islands within one.
In this article, we will present some of the places that you must visit in your passage through the island of Flores.
Seven Boilers
The island of Flores has seven volcanic craters that have undergone a transformation, having become seven beautiful lagoons (this is a phenomenon that culminates when the structure of the central top of the volcanic massif collapses and then, due to the rains, becomes capable of rainwater).
Their names are related to the landscape features that hover around them: Funda, Rasa, Lomba, Seca, Branca, Comprida and Negra. The last one, Negra, is 100 meters deep, constituting the deepest lagoon of the archipelago.
Waterfalls
Due to the great abundance of water resources that this island brings, the island of Flores has many cascades. The one that is located in the locality of Ribeira Grande, crashes in an extension of 300 meters. Then, in the locality of Fajã Grande, we have the Poço do Bacalhau (Codfish Well) that presents a waterfall of 90 meters forming, in its fall base, a natural freshwater pool. Between Fajã Grande and Fajãzinha, it is one of the ex-libris of Flores because, between the extensive green wall that surrounds this area, developed close to 20 cascades. To have a wide and monumental view of these cascades, go down to near Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro (also known as Poço da Alagoinha) and you will be surprised by this natural beauty. This well is formed by the fall of these cascades.
Fajã de Lopo Vaz
Fajã de Lopo Vaz is named this way because of one of the first settlers on the island. It is thought that this was the first place to receive housing on the island and there you will find goats that live in a free and wild state.
Enxaréus Cave
It is a semi-submerged cavity located on the coast line between Santa Cruz and Caveira. It is about 50 meters long and 25 meters wide. It can only be visited by boat, which will make your experience even more pleasant.
Morro dos Frades
This is a rock formation hill with a peculiar shape. Due to erosion, its shape resembles the silhouettes of a friar and a nun, a look that causes a lot of curiosity for those who pass by.
Morro Alto
This is the highest point of the island of Flores, with about 914 meters of altitude. Due to this altitude, this hill provides a wide view over the lagoons and the green valleys that give way to small streams. It is also possible to see, from this place, the localities of Ponta Delgada, Fajã Grande and Fajãzinha.
Rocha dos Bordões
A Rocha dos Bordões, another of the postcards of the island of Flores, is a set of large vertical basalt columns derived from lava solidification. This presents a significant height and is coated with moss and other vegetation that reason to its beauty. Its shape is very caricatured and impresses anyone.
