The Azores are a group of islands with a strong religious connection and, therefore, there are hundreds of buildings that show this connection. One of these constructions is the imposing Ermida de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias, located on the island of São Miguel, in the parish of Furnas in the municipality of Povoação.
It is located, more precisely, on the shore of Lagoa das Furnas, one of the most beautiful and one of the largest lagoons in the Azores. This monument is one of the impressive examples of the neo-Gothic style of construction in the Azores. This chapel was built by José do Canto at the end of the 19th century due to a promise made to his wife. Still alive, José do Canto had this artistic chapel built, inspired by the style of the great European cathedrals. Inside, there are two graves: José do Canto’s and his wife’s.
It was inaugurated on August 15, 1886, and is integrated into the Mata Jardim José do Canto. There, it will also have at your disposal a beautiful garden, with a botanical collection of endemic plants, from which the camellias stand out, and also the Salto do Rosal, a beautiful waterfall.
