Address:
Calheta, São Jorge
Description:
In fact, the great peculiarity of the mountainous island, in the shape of a torpedo or cigar, as Nemésio saw São Jorge, are the fajãs, almost all inhabited, but difficult to access.
As Ávila (1882) recalls, “just a short time ago, access to the most important fajãs was by red bagacina paths, starting from the main road - from Topo to Rosais - and winding through the slopes, rich in the most diverse shades of vegetation, paths that today have the benefit and convenience of asphalt, which allows the use of cars in more than reasonable conditions.
The others, the humblest and most remote, will continue to be descended by footpaths, sometimes alternating with steps inlaid or carved into the rock itself.
Visit Calheta, capital of the Fajãs!
