The headquarters of the Flores Museum is located in the Convent of São Boaventura and is responsible for the management of the Fábrica da Baleia do Boqueirão ("Whale Factory of Boqueirão").
The factory was commissioned by Francisco Marcelino dos Reis for the use of sperm whale oil and guano production. The works took place between 1941 and 1944. It was owned by several owners and closed down in 1981.
The Convent of São Boaventura has its origin in a deed of donation from father Inácio Coelho, brother of Frei Diogo das Chagas, dated 1641. The Franciscans remained there until the advent of liberalism. António Vicente Peixoto Pimentel bought the convent, in 1873, to donate it to Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Santa Cruz das Flores, in order to install a hospital to serve the people of Flores and Corvo. The building kept these functions until the late sixties of the last century. At that time was adapted to school and in 1993, after extensive restoration works, reopened to serve the Museum of Flores.
It has a palatial facade where horizontality predominates. It is characterized by a strong angularity and intense planimetry of its compositional elements.
The church is a relatively large and tall building, rectangular in plan, with no transept and a single nave, cylindrical, made of painted wood. The altarpieces are in gilded cedar wood. The ceiling is dominated by vegetal and floral decoration.
