Built in the ruins of the former Marie d'Anjou canning factory, on the steep slope overlooking the pier of Calheta village, the Francisco de Lacerda Museum has as its mission the study, preservation, enhancement and dissemination of the Jorgense heritage and its community.
In 1984, the Regional Secretariat of Education and Culture acquires the old building in order to install the Ethnographic House, which in 1991 is inaugurated with the designation of Museum of S. Jorge. The Francisco de Lacerda Museum thus assimilates its origins and the local culture through the collections based on the themes of São Jorge Island, Music (erudite, popular, by Francisco de Lacerda and the philharmonic bands) and also the Canning Industry, among others.
You can enjoy other spaces such as the documentation center, the auditorium reserved for events, the temporary exhibition room, and leisure areas inside and outside. Visits to the museum's reserves (collections) will also be available at previously determined times.
Assuming the motto "The Museum for All" and aware of the mission to promote the tangible and intangible heritage of Jorgão, we will work for and with people, with the responsibility to do more and better.
