The "Manuel de Arriaga House" is an 18th century property, classified as of Public Interest, which was the residence of the 1st President of the Portuguese Republic, elected on August 24, 1911 and the object of a rehabilitation project initiated by the Presidency of the Regional Government of the Azores through the Regional Directorate of Culture.
With an architectural project by Rui Pinto and Ana Robalo | Architects, a museological program from the Museum of Horta and a museographic project by Rui Filipe and Claúdia Zimmermman, this cultural equipment evokes the important figure from Faial, Manuel de Arriaga, the 1st President of the Portuguese Republic, who was born there and lived much of his youth, highlighting its various functional aspects: spaces for long-term exhibition and film projection, temporary exhibitions, consultation of digitalized documentation and library, multipurpose room and green area.
The Manuel de Arriaga House, besides fixing the memory of the first President of the Republic and his time, projects itself in the substance of its ideals and republican values, as a modern core of reflection and stimulus to civic participation.
