Address:
Rua dos Baleeiros, Portugal, Pico 9930-143
Description:

The Museu dos Baleeiros in Lajes do Pico, the only museum in Portugal specialized in artisanal whaling, seasonal and coastal, and the most visited in the Azores, in complementarity with the Museu da Indústria Baleeira, is the only museum structure in the region with the potential to become a privileged space of global explanation of Azorean whaling.

The museum building, with a covered area of about 2000m2, consists of: a group of three whaling boat houses from the 19th century, complemented by a tent, a whaling boat house and a whaling museum. The museum's building, with a covered area of around 2000m2, comprises three whaling boat houses from the 19th century, complemented by an annexed blacksmith's tent, integrated into a new building - strongly marked by an architecture inspired by North-American whaling - that houses an archive and a library specialized in whaling; an area for the reception and sales store, the Temporary Exhibitions Gallery, the Educational Services, the Photographic Archive, the Direction and the Technical and Administrative Services; a modernly equipped Auditorium.
