Sports to Practice in the Azores

The Azores archipelago is a destination that offers an abundance of opportunities for outdoor activities and sports. Whether you are an experienced athlete or just looking for a new hobby, there is something for everyone here. Here are some of the best sports to try:

Surf

The sea represents an important part of the identity of the Azores. Therefore, it is safe to say that any surf lover can find a surfer’s paradise on the Azorean beaches. With its warm waters and consistent waves, perfect for beginners and experienced surfers alike, the Azores has world-famous beaches that are often host to surf competitions, both regionally and nationally. Some examples include:
  • Areal de Santa Bárbara Beach (São Miguel);
  • Praia da Vitória (Terceira Island);
  • Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo (São Jorge);

Trails

The Azores have some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Europe, and trails are one of the best ways to enjoy them. From gentle hikes through lush vegetation to some more challenging ones through steep cliffs and mountains, there are countless trails to explore. Diving

With its clear waters and abundant marine life, the Azores is a prime destination for scuba diving. Whether you are a beginner or experienced diver, you will find many opportunities to explore the underwater world, with sites such as the Dori Ship, a former military freighter that sank near the coast of São Miguel. You can also dive the Caloura arches and the Mosteiros islet.
On other islands, you will enter places like:
  • The Ilhéu da Vila and the Gruta de São Lourenço (Santa Maria Island);
  • Gruta do Ilhéu das Cabras and Ilhéu da Calheta do Lagador (Terceira Island);
  • Terceirense Ship (located in front of Porto da Praia (Graciosa Island);
  • Entre-Morros Zone (São Jorge Island);
  • Condor Submarine Bank (Pico Island);
  • Fumarolas de Espalamaca (Faial Island);
  • Gruta do Galo and Ilhéu do Garajau (Flores Island);
  • Baixa do Buraco (Corvo Island).

Fishing

The ports and beaches of the Azores are a fisherman’s paradise, with a variety of species to fish for and stunning scenery to enjoy. From deep sea fishing for tuna and marlin to fishing for dogfish, kingfish, mackerel, among others, there is something for everyone. It is possible to fish, depending on the time of year, on the coast, in streams, and in ponds.
Some of the most recommended fishing ports include:
  • Shore fishing ports, such as Ponta da Bretanha, Fenais da Luz, Nordeste, Porto Formoso, Rabo de Peixe, Mosteiros and Vila Franca do Campo. Obtain your fishing license at the Forestry Services and RIAC; (São Miguel Island)
  • Coastal fishing grounds, such as Laje do Morro, Baía da Enfiada and Ponta das Eiras; (São Jorge Island)
  • Coastal fishing grounds, such as Lugar da Furna. You can also fish in the area from the exit of Madalena, in Lajes and São Roque; (Pico Island)
  • Fishing from the exit of Santa Cruz to the exit of Fajã Grande; (Flores Island)

Canyoning | Climbing

For the extreme sports enthusiast, these are sports you must try. With its dramatic cliffs and rock formations, the Azores are a perfect destination for rock climbing and canyoning. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced climber, there are plenty of opportunities to test your skills and enjoy the stunning views.
