The Azores are the best Adventure Tourism Destination in Europe

4 November, 2020AzoresAzores Guide
The Azores archipelago continues to impress, further strengthening its international tourism status. In the 2020 edition of the World Travel Awards, this being the 27th edition, the Azores were distinguished with the “Europe’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination 2020” award.
In this edition, Portugal has collected another 20 awards and was also elected as “Best European Destination”, a distinction that praises all companies and professionals in the sector. Note that this is the fourth consecutive year that Portugal receives this distinction. The 2020 edition was held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The winners were selected by the public and by more than 200 thousand tourism professionals, among more than 160 countries around the world.
For Marta Guerreiro, Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism, this is one of the ways to promote the Azores destination worldwide, clearly highlighting adventure tourism, one of the stamps of choice for the autonomous region.
Despite the pandemic context that the whole world is currently experiencing, Marta Guerreiro stresses that “the Azores have the ideal characteristics for this new tourist era, due to the fact that tourists resort to less massive destinations where the natural characteristic prevails.
The distinction justifies the investment that has been made in promoting the Azores destination, especially that which is made directly and related to nature, and this is the profile that the tourist who visits the Azores seeks.
In what are “the Oscars of Tourism”, the Azores receive one more way to leverage their tourist image and the distinction fits perfectly: a huge sea where it is possible to spot cetaceans or even dive in unique places, amazing walking trails, mountain biking, canyoning, climbing, natural baths, surfing, among so many other adventures that the paradisiacal islands provide.
