It is the highest point on the island, measuring about 914 meters. So this is the ideal place to get a panoramic view of the island, as well as the lagoons, waterfalls, and its exuberant vegetation that so characterizes the island of Flores.
Seven Calderas
The island of Flores has seven craters of volcanic origin, which over time have become seven magnificent lagoons. All of these are named according to their characteristics, such as: Lagoa Funda (deep); Rasa (shallow); Lomba, Seca (dry), Branca (white), Comprida (long), and Negra (black). It is never a bad idea to visit these lagoons and be in contact with nature.
Waterfalls
The island of Flores is also known for its emblematic waterfalls, typically surrounded by the abundant vegetation characteristic of the island.
Among these, stand out:
Poço do Bacalhau – The Poço do Bacalhau waterfall, located in Fajã Grande, is about 90 meters high. Do you know the best part? In the well created by the waterfall, you can bathe.
Ribeira do Ferreiro Well – Also known as Alagoinha Well, it is without a doubt an ex-libris of the island of Flores. The extensive wall that surrounds it is covered by abundant vegetation, from which several waterfalls emerge, creating one of the most incredible and emblematic landscapes of the Azores.
Morro dos Frades
With a unique shape, caused by erosion, this is a place that causes a lot of curiosity. Its name comes from its appearance, as this hill resembles the silhouettes of a friar and a nun.
Rocha dos Bordões
This curious geological formation quickly gained importance due to its peculiar appearance. It presents a series of columns with vertical orientation, which stand out for their symmetry. It is also covered with mosses and other vegetation, adding to its natural beauty.
Bathing Zones
Summer in the Azores is synonym of beach, so we couldn’t help but recommend the bathing areas of the island. Here, you can bathe in crystal clear waters and with mild temperatures. Among these we highlight the natural pools of Santa Cruz, the beaches near Lajes das Flores and the other places available in Fajã Grande, such as the ports (Novo and Velho), natural pool or the waterfalls mentioned above.
