Are you in Santa Maria and want to enjoy the good weather on the Island of the Sun? Find out what to visit here.
Formosa Beach
Located in the parish of Almagreira, the Praia Formosa beach stands out for the light color of its sand, contrasting with the dark color that predominates in the remaining beaches of the archipelago.
The beach extends for almost 1 kilometer and has crystalline waters, not very deep and with inviting temperatures, being thus a place propitious to a good dive, as well as to the practice of nautical sports. It is also flanked by two hillsides, and can be admired from the Miradouro da Macela.
The beach is equipped with toilets, showers, surveillance, parking and facilities for people with reduced mobility, as well as a campsite at the far end of the beach.
São Lourenço Bay
It is located in the parish of Santa Bárbara and is one of the largest beaches of the Azores. The beach is at the bottom of a hillside marked by its plantations of vineyards, which produce the wine of São Lourenço. Although it is shallow, it is possible to go diving in the bay and observe a great diversity of species of marine fauna and flora.
Close by is the Ilhéu de São Lourenço, an islet with a natural cave with stalactites and stalagmites. The access to its interior is made by boat.
Bathing area of Maia
It is located in the parish of Santo Espírito and has a natural saltwater swimming pool. From here it is possible to observe the vineyards that cover the hillsides and the Gonçalo Velho Lighthouse, also known as the Maia Lighthouse.
Bathing Area of Anjos
Located in the parish of Vila do Porto, this was the place where Christopher Columbus disembarked on his return from the voyage of the discovery of America. Besides its great historical value, Anjos Bay is very sought after by tourists. It is one of the places of choice for sea lovers, not only for its clear water and mild temperature, but also for its beautiful natural pool.
Pico Alto
Good weather not only allows for a nice day at the beach. It also allows for fantastic views. So we recommend a climb to Pico Alto, the highest point in Santa Maria. It reaches 590 meters high and from the top you can get a panoramic view of the whole island. Cloud formation around the summit is common, so an opportunity to climb Pico Alto should not be missed. You can even do it via a trail (PRC02 SMA)
Santa Maria Cantaloupe
Summer time calls for a refreshing delicacy. We suggest the Santa Maria melon. This typical fruit is the perfect delicacy to accompany a summer day on the Island of the Sun.
