What to do on a summer day in Terceira island

19 August, 2022AzoresAzores Guide

Monte Brasil

This old volcano of maritime origin is now a natural park full of vegetation. Nowadays, it has several leisure facilities, where you can relax and snack, and also several viewpoints with stunning views over the city of Angra do Heroísmo. You can also explore the area by following the Monte Brasil trail (PRC04 TER), where you will pass by historical landmarks, such as the Santo António Chapel and the monument to the 5th Centenary of the Settlement of Terceira Island. You will also have the pleasure of passing through fantastic landscapes rich in nature such as Pico Facho and even observe several endemic plants such as the Urze. What better way to enjoy a summer day than to connect with the nature of the Azores?

Bathing area of Biscoitos

If a good dive is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of summer, then don’t forget to visit the bathing area of Biscoitos. These natural pools located between volcanic rocks have crystal clear waters that are perfect for diving. The site is equipped with showers, kiosks, and lifeguards. So now you know where to cool off on a summer day on Terceira island.

Prainha Bathing Area

One of the most popular bathing areas in Angra do Heroísmo, due to its proximity to good infrastructure, as well as its good accesses. This is, still, the only sand beach in the municipality. The beach is located inside the Angra Bay next to the Marina. Certainly a good choice on a hot summer day.

Lagoa das Patas and Lagoa do Negro

A day of good weather always presents a good opportunity to enjoy the island’s lagoons. So why not visit Lagoa das Patas? Surrounded, not only by a great variety of vegetation, some of it endemic, but also by a great forest density, this lagoon differs a little from the others in the archipelago because it is artificial. The ingenuity behind its feeding mechanism allows it to remain full through the runoff from the Santa Barbara Mountains. Thus, it is appealing for a relaxing walk on a summer afternoon.
The Lagoa do Negro has a very characteristic appearance due to the abundance of cryptomeria on one side. This, like most of the lagoons in the Azores is of volcanic origin. However, like any Azorean lake, this one comes with a legend. This legend tells the story of a love forbidden by the customs of the time. Stay tuned to our articles to learn more about this story.

Duque da Terceira Garden

Considered one of the most beautiful classical gardens in the Azores, this space located in the historic center of the city classified as World Heritage, Angra do Heroísmo, has a huge variety of exotic plant species. The serenity of the park is something not to be missed on your visit to Terceira, especially with favorable weather conditions.

Facho Viewpoint

Located at the top of Serra do Facho, this viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the city of Praia da Vitória, including its marina and sandy beach.
Curiously, its name is due to the fact that, for a long time, it had a “lighthouse” function, because, here, a fire was lit to warn the navigators. This place was capable of sending more than 60 different messages, using the combination of the bonfire and flags.

Serra do Cume Viewpoint

The Serra do Cume belvedere is one of the most emblematic belvederes of the island, due to the fantastic view that can be obtained over the interior of the island, as well as over the municipality of Praia da Vitória. The viewpoint is separated in two faces. From one of them you can see the city of Praia da Vitória and the Lajes Plain. On the other side, you can see the so-called “patchwork”, a green plain divided by volcanic stone walls.
A summer day will be ideal for your visit to this place, because, given its altitude (545 meters), cloud formation is common, which prevents you from seeing the full view.
